Saint Agnes of Prague was a noblewoman who chose radical poverty and humility over royal privilege. Born into a royal family in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), she was promised in marriage to powerful rulers across Europe. Yet Agnes felt a stronger call—to belong completely to Christ.
Inspired by Saint Clare of Assisi, Agnes renounced wealth, status, and marriage to embrace a life of poverty and prayer. She founded monasteries, hospitals, and charitable institutions, serving the poor and sick with deep compassion. As a Poor Clare abbess, she lived simply and joyfully, leading others by example.
Saint Agnes teaches us that true freedom and joy are found not in power or riches, but in giving our whole hearts to God.
Did You Know?
Saint Agnes of Prague corresponded personally with Saint Clare of Assisi, who encouraged her to remain faithful to the life of poverty and devotion to Christ.
Prayer of the Day
Saint Agnes of Prague,
bride of Christ and lover of holy poverty,
teach us to seek true riches in God alone.
Help us to let go of what holds us back
and to serve others with humility and love.
Pray for us, that our hearts
may be free to follow Christ fully.
Amen.
