Catholic Prayer for January 28, 2026

January 28 is the feast day (Memorial) of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar.

O God, who wonderfully illumined your Church by the angelic teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas, grant that we may, by his merits and intercession, grow in wisdom and in love of you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Thomas Aquinas is also known for several beautiful personal prayers he composed, often used on or near his feast day. One of the most famous is his Prayer Before Study (or Student’s Prayer), which many Catholics pray when seeking wisdom or clarity:

Creator of all things, true source of light and wisdom,
origin of all being,
graciously let a ray of your light penetrate
the darkness of my understanding.
Take from me the double darkness
in which I have been born,
an obscurity of sin and ignorance.
Give me a keen understanding,
a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp things
correctly and fundamentally.
Grant me the talent of being exact in my explanations
and the ability to express myself with thoroughness and charm.
Point out the beginning of my efforts,
direct its progress,
and help in its completion.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
