Day 6: St. Thomas Aquinas Novena

Meditation / Reflection:
St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, was not only a brilliant intellect who harmonized faith and reason in works like the Summa Theologica, but he was also a man overflowing with divine charity. His profound love for God and neighbor shone through his humility, his patient teaching, and his selfless devotion to truth. Despite his towering genius, he remained meek, recognizing that all wisdom comes from God alone. He lived the words of St. Paul: “Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude… it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

Thomas’s charity was practical—he poured himself out in service to the Church, his students, and the poor souls seeking truth. He turned to prayer when faced with difficulties in writing or understanding, entrusting his mind and heart to God. His life teaches us that true wisdom is inseparable from love: intellectual pursuits must lead to greater charity, and charity must be grounded in truth. In an age often marked by pride in knowledge or division, St. Thomas shows that humility before God and love for others are the hallmarks of authentic Christian wisdom.

Reflection questions / personal application:

  • How do I combine my pursuit of knowledge or truth with acts of charity and kindness toward others?
  • In moments of intellectual struggle or pride, do I turn to prayer as St. Thomas did, seeking God’s light?
  • Am I growing in the virtues of patience, humility, and love, or do self-interest and arrogance sometimes hinder me?
  • How can I imitate St. Thomas’s charity in my daily interactions, especially in teaching, learning, or serving others?

Pray Day 6

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Sweet Jesus, Body and Blood most Holy, be the delight and pleasure of my soul, my strength and salvation in all temptations, my joy and peace in every trial, my light and guide in every word and deed, and my final protector in death. Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you.

Amen
