The Magis Center of Reason and Faith, a Catholic organization dedicated to showing how science and rationality give evidence for God, has released a chatbot called MagisAI that answers questions about theology.
“Today there are more challenges from the secular culture about God, Jesus, life after death Christian morality, Scripture, and so much more,” Father Robert Spitzer, president of the Magis Center, said in an introductory video within the app. “And ironically there’s more scientific and rational evidence for all of these things than ever before.”
“We want to give everyone who wants it every imaginable answer to the nexus between science, reason, and faith,” he said, “as well as every possible answer to all of the challenges that the secular culture may present to them in one AI app.”
The Magis Center intends for the chatbot to be widely accessible to people with different backgrounds.
MagisAI is designed to answer users’ questions at various academic levels, from fifth grade to a post-college graduate level. Users can specify the academic level at which they would like questions answered. Additionally, they can ask the chatbot to simplify answers or go into more detail about them as needed. The chatbot can also answer questions in 60 different languages.
The app also provides hyperlinks to scholarly articles in its answers, and it allows users to access a complete library of sources.
The app has free and paid versions, with the free version allowing users to store up to three conversations and the paid version allowing for more. It can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play Store or accessed online at MagisAI.com.
Fr. Spitzer said in the announcement video that he hopes MagisAI will help Catholics to feel more confident when confronting arguments against the faith.
“No one should have to be intimidated by secular viewpoints, no one should feel in doubt about the tremendous scientific and rational evidence for God, Jesus, life after death, and the Church,” he said, “and no one should feel defenseless before secular challenges to Christian morality, scripture, and doctrine.”
