Saint of the Day: Saint John of Matha (1154–1213)

Priest, Founder of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity (Trinitarians)

Saint John of Matha was a priest of deep compassion and courage, called by God to serve those who suffered in captivity. He is best known as the founder of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, commonly known as the Trinitarians, whose mission was the redemption of Christian captives.

Born in France, John was a brilliant scholar and theologian. While celebrating his first Mass, he received a profound vision of Christ holding two captives—one Christian and one Muslim—revealing God’s desire for mercy, freedom, and peace for all. This vision became the foundation of his life’s mission.

Moved by this call, Saint John founded the Trinitarian Order in 1198 with the approval of Pope Innocent III. The Trinitarians dedicated themselves to raising funds, negotiating with captors, and even offering themselves in exchange for prisoners, living out Christ’s command to love without limit.

Saint John lived a life of prayer, humility, and trust in Divine Providence. His work restored freedom, dignity, and hope to thousands of captives and remains a powerful witness to the Church’s mission of mercy and reconciliation.

He died in 1213, leaving behind a legacy of charity rooted in the mystery of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Prayer to Saint John of Matha

O Saint John of Matha,
faithful servant of Christ and apostle of mercy,
you gave your life to bring freedom to the captive
and hope to the forgotten.

Intercede for us,
that our hearts may be moved with compassion
for those who suffer injustice and persecution.

Teach us to trust in God’s providence
and to serve others with courage and love,
for the glory of the Holy Trinity.

Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
