Saint of the Day: Saint John of the Cross

Saint John of the Cross (1542–1591) was a Carmelite priest, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. He is best known for his profound spiritual writings, especially The Dark Night of the Soul, which guide believers through suffering toward deeper union with God.

Working closely with Saint Teresa of Ávila, John helped reform the Carmelite Order, calling both clergy and laity to a life of prayer, simplicity, and total trust in God. His faithfulness came at a great cost: misunderstanding, imprisonment, and harsh treatment by his own brethren. Yet even in darkness, he remained peaceful, patient, and deeply united to Christ.

Saint John taught that suffering, when embraced with love, purifies the soul and opens the heart to God’s transforming grace. His life reminds us that God is often closest when He seems most silent.

Prayer

Saint John of the Cross,
guide us through times of darkness and doubt.
Help us to trust God completely
and to seek Him with pure and loving hearts.
Amen.
