Saint of the Day: Saint Cecilia – Virgin and Martyr

Feast Day: November 22

Saint Cecilia is one of the most beloved martyrs of the early Church and the heavenly patroness of musicians, singers, and sacred music. Born into a noble Roman family in the 2nd or 3rd century, Cecilia devoted her heart completely to God from a young age. Although she was given in marriage to a pagan nobleman named Valerian, she told him that she had consecrated her virginity to Christ and that an angel guarded her purity.

Touched by her holiness, Valerian and his brother Tiburtius converted to Christianity. Soon after, all three were arrested during a time of persecution and bravely chose death rather than deny their faith. Cecilia herself endured terrible tortures but steadfastly proclaimed her love for Christ until her martyrdom.

Her home was later converted into a church, and devotion to her spread quickly. She has long been celebrated as the patron saint of sacred music because tradition says she “sang in her heart to the Lord” even in moments of suffering.

Prayer

Saint Cecilia, faithful bride of Christ and patroness of sacred music, pray for us that we may praise God with pure hearts and joyful lives. Amen.
