Saint of the Day: Saint Gelasius I – Pope and Confessor

Feast Day: November 21

Saint Gelasius I, who served as Pope from 492 to 496, is remembered as one of the greatest early leaders of the Church. Born in Africa, Gelasius became a strong defender of Catholic doctrine at a time of theological confusion and political tension.

He is best known for clearly defining the relationship between the spiritual authority of the Church and the temporal authority of the state. His writings emphasized that while emperors have worldly power, the Pope has spiritual authority given by Christ to guide the Church. This teaching helped shape Catholic understanding of Church and state for centuries.

Pope Gelasius was also deeply charitable, known for personally serving the poor of Rome. He worked to purify the liturgy, strengthen discipline, and combat heresies, especially the Monophysite error.

He died in 496, remembered as a wise shepherd, a strong defender of truth, and a humble servant of God’s people.

Prayer

Saint Gelasius, holy pope and defender of the faith, pray for us that we may remain strong in truth and charity. Amen.
