President Donald Trump said Nov. 14 he is directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate alleged ties between convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and several high-profile Democrats.
In a social media post, Trump named former President Bill Clinton, Democratic megadonor Reid Hoffman, and former Harvard President Larry Summers — who held senior roles in both the Clinton and Obama administrations — along with the bank JPMorgan Chase among those he will ask Bondi to investigate.
He framed the move as timely, saying it came because “Democrats are using the Epstein Hoax, involving Democrats, not Republicans, to try and deflect from their disastrous SHUTDOWN, and all of their other failures.”
“This is another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam,” Trump added, “with all arrows pointing to the Democrats. Records show that these men, and many others, spent large portions of their life with Epstein, and on his ‘Island.’ Stay tuned!!!”
A few hours later, Bondi announced the Justice Department would move forward, saying attorneys in the Southern District of New York would take up the case.
“Thank you, Mr. President. SDNY U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton is one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country, and I’ve asked him to take the lead. As with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people,” Bondi wrote in a post on X.
The directive comes just days after a Nov. 12 release of emails by House Democrats in which Epstein told associates that “of course” Trump “knew about the girls.” While the disclosure fueled rampant speculation about Trump’s past ties to Epstein, the White House maintained Trump’s innocence in the matter and dismissed the emails as politically motivated.
On the same day, Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ro Khanna, D-Calif., secured the 218 signatures required to trigger a discharge petition that forces a House vote on releasing all remaining Epstein files. According to The Hill, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he will bring a vote on a bill to release the files next week.
