Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner said Heartbeat International’s work topples the myth that the pro-life movement cares only for children in the womb — a frequent charge from those supporting abortion.
Turner delivered the remarks during a Nov. 4 briefing with White House staff and Heartbeat’s Babies Go to Congress assembly, Pregnancy Help News reported. According to the outlet, the White House Office of Public Liaison organized the briefing. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Domestic Policy Council Deputy Director Heidi Overton, and Director of Media Affairs Sonny Joy Nelson all attended.
Heartbeat — the largest network of pregnancy help organizations in the U.S. and worldwide — launched its Babies Go to Congress program in 2009 to bring mothers, babies, and pregnancy center staff to Capitol Hill to share how pregnancy help has transformed their lives, Pregnancy Help News previously reported.
“Your work combats the lie that pro-abortion crusades spread, the lie that our side is only pro-birth but not pro-life,” he told delegates of the organization.
“They say that we care for babies only when they’re in the womb, but that we care nothing for them or for their mothers once they’re actually born,” he continued, according to Pregnancy Help News. “But I care for people from the womb to the tomb. Not just when they’re in the womb, but when they’re living until they go to glory with the Lord.”
Turner said abortion advocates would have experienced a “Road to Damascus” moment if they had heard mothers share firsthand how pregnancy centers helped them choose life. He also commended Heartbeat affiliates for offering ultrasounds, mentorship, material support, and long-term support.
“I know it’s not easy. I know sometimes it’s what they say is a thankless job, but it’s not thankless,” he said. “Every day that you get to see a new life is a blessing from the Lord. Every day that you get to see a mother change her mind is a miracle from God in heaven. So, thank y’all for what you do.”
Turner then connected HUD’s mission to pro-life principles and said strong families and affordable homeownership depend on protecting children in the womb.
“To have American families to begin with,” he said, “we must fight back against the murder of our children in the womb, and against the propaganda which seeks to paint this atrocity as something respectable and normal. That will never be okay with me.”
He closed by sharing that he has an adopted sibling and is raising his sister’s son.
“So, I’m not standing before y’all to tell you what I heard,” Turner said. “I’m living it.”
