Saint of the Day: St. Sylvia (Mother of St. Gregory the Great)

Feast Day: November 5

Biography:
St. Sylvia lived in the 6th century in Rome and is best known as the mother of Pope St. Gregory the Great, one of the Church’s greatest popes and doctors. She was a woman of deep faith, humility, and charity, raising her children in the love and fear of God.

After her husband, Gordianus, died, St. Sylvia dedicated herself entirely to prayer and good works. She lived a quiet, holy life in a small house near the Church of St. Saba, where her son Gregory later founded a monastery.

Her example as a devout wife and mother shows that holiness often begins in the heart of the home. The Church honors her for her great influence on her saintly son and for her hidden life of virtue.

Prayer:
Lord, through the intercession of St. Sylvia, bless all mothers that they may raise their children in faith and love, guiding them toward holiness. Amen.
