Feast Day: October 17
Patronage: Church in the Eastern Mediterranean, Church unity
Biography:
Saint Ignatius of Antioch was one of the earliest and most courageous Christian martyrs. Born in Syria around the year 35 AD, he became the third bishop of Antioch, succeeding Saint Peter and Saint Evodius. A disciple of the Apostle John, Ignatius faithfully led the Church during times of severe persecution. Arrested for his faith under Emperor Trajan, he was taken to Rome, where he was thrown to the wild beasts in the arena. On his journey to martyrdom, he wrote seven powerful letters to Christian communities, encouraging them to remain united in faith, to obey their bishops, and to love Christ above all. His writings remain a treasured witness to the early Church’s belief in the Eucharist and Church authority. He was martyred around 107 AD.
Prayer:
O God, who granted Saint Ignatius of Antioch the grace of a glorious martyrdom, help us to imitate his courage and faith. May we love You with all our hearts and remain united in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Amen.
