A major chapter in Texas’ abortion history closed this week as Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (PPGC) officially shut down its Houston headquarters, one of the largest abortion facilities in the country.
According to a press release from Texas Right to Life, the closure became official Sept. 30. Pro-life advocates gathered in response, offering public prayers and expressing gratitude for what many view as a milestone in the effort to end abortion access in the state.
The closure, anticipated since Planned Parenthood announced it in July, includes the Houston site known as Prevention Park and a second location in the city’s southwest. CatholicVote reported on the announcement at the time, noting PPGC’s size and controversial legacy.
Located along Interstate 45, the site had long been a focal point of debate and protest. Although the facility stopped performing abortions after the procedure was banned in Texas, it continued operating as a referral center, directing women to out-of-state clinics where abortion remains legal.
Texas Right to Life President John Seago responded to the initial announcement of the closure in a July 25 X post, describing the Houston facility as an “icon for the abortion business for decades.” He referenced its role in undercover videos that exposed PPGC staff discussing the harvesting and sale of fetal body parts and said the site represented “hundreds of thousands of babies killed and women harmed by their maniacal focus on advancing elective abortion no matter what.”
“Even after Roe was overturned, this location across from the University of Houston became an abortion travel agency; scheduling, paying, and rushing women to take their babies to other states to be killed,” Seago wrote.
He added, “This closure is worth celebrating.”
Four other Houston-area Planned Parenthood sites — Northville, Northwest, Spring, and Stafford — will continue operating, though none provide abortion procedures, according to the release. Clinics in cities such as Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio remain open as well. Planned Parenthood also shut down its Tyler location in East Texas in July.
As these facilities continue to close, the work of pregnancy resource centers is expected to take on new urgency. Texas Right to Life hopes those centers will grow in visibility and impact, offering practical support to women facing unplanned pregnancies and promoting a culture of life.
“We pray that pregnancy resource centers in Houston will continue to rise to meet the need,” the release stated, “stepping in where Planned Parenthood once profited, and saving more innocent lives than ever before.”
