Planned Parenthood closes both clinics in Louisiana

Planned Parenthood closed its two locations in Louisiana Sept. 30, citing legal and financial challenges.

“Planned Parenthood built its business around promoting death. Louisiana chose life,” said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, according to WVUE FOX 8.

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast said that its locations in Louisiana had faced “political warfare”; seemingly referring to both state and federal law.

Abortion is illegal in Louisiana. While Planned Parenthood was never licensed to perform abortions in the state, it has been a key player in facilitating out-of-state abortions for the state’s residents, as CatholicVote previously reported. Additionally, it provided contraceptives, according to KPLC, and “transgender” hormone treatments, according to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.

President Donald Trump on July 4 signed into law the Big Beautiful Bill, which prevents Medicaid dollars from funding abortions.  A federal judge initially blocked the change, but a US Appeals Court panel said last month that the move could continue for the moment, according to AP News.

Louisiana Right to Life’s policy director, Erica Inzina, said that even amid this victory, pro-lifers in the state must be vigilant.

“This is not the end of Planned Parenthood,” she said, according to WVUE. “We anticipate that they will come up with other ways to continue to promote abortion in our state. So we’re thrilled to see [the closing], but we’re certainly still on guard.”

Louisiana is in the midst of a legal battle to ensure that out-of-state doctors cease providing abortifacients to women in the state. As CatholicVote previously reported, a Louisiana grand jury indicted a doctor for trafficking abortion pills into the state. Some states where abortion is legal, such as New York, have attempted to shield doctors providing abortifacients to women in states where it is illegal.

News of Louisiana’s Planned Parenthood locations’ closure follows Planned Parenthood in Wisconsin’s announcement that it would “pause” abortions because of funding issues.
