Saint of the Day: Saint Jerome

On September 30, the Church honors Saint Jerome (c. 347–420), a priest, monk, and Doctor of the Church, best known for translating the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate), which became the official text of the Church for centuries.

Born in Dalmatia, Jerome was a brilliant scholar with a fiery temperament. After his conversion, he dedicated his life to Scripture, prayer, and ascetic living. He spent years in the Holy Land, where he studied Hebrew and lived as a hermit near Bethlehem. Jerome tirelessly defended the faith against heresies and wrote extensively, leaving a lasting mark on Christian theology and biblical studies.

He is the patron saint of biblical scholars, translators, librarians, and students, reminding us of the importance of knowing and living God’s Word.

Prayer
O Lord, through the intercession of Saint Jerome, give us a deep love for Your Word and the courage to live it daily. Amen.
