When Tom Venzor first encountered the Nebraska Catholic Conference (NCC), he was a second-year law student who — like many Catholics, he says — had no idea that the Church has had a dedicated presence in public policy through such organizations for decades.
In every state in the U.S., a Catholic conference serves as the official public policy voice of the Church. These bodies are tasked with applying Catholic social teaching to legislative, legal, and cultural issues — everything from protecting life and religious freedom to supporting families and vulnerable communities.
Venzor is now marking his own decade of service at the NCC in a role he calls his “dream job.” In a Sept. 26 reflection published in the Southern Nebraska Register, Venzor offered a personal and illuminating look at what a state Catholic Conference does and why it matters.
Venzor described their work as a continuation of the Church’s public engagement, grounded in a long-standing commitment to Gospel principles. For him, the work is deeply vocational. He said he considers it a privilege to support the continuation of his organization’s work and legacy.
“I have, by the grace of God, never had a day where I didn’t want to go to work,” he reflected, later adding, “I work on amazing issues that make major and lasting impacts on the lives of Nebraskans.”
The NCC, like its counterparts in other states, brings the voice of the Church into public discussions. Venzor credits the bishops he works with as “men united to the heart of Jesus Christ” and deeply committed to Catholic social teaching. Their leadership, he said, fosters “intelligent, insightful, and incisive discussions on how to witness to the Gospel on public policy matters.”
He emphasized that the mission of a Catholic Conference is not only institutional but spiritual. Over the years, he’s seen public officials deepen their faith through daily Mass, the Rosary, Bible studies, and pilgrimages.
He added, “These graces flow over into their public life of bearing the light of Christ in the public square.”
