A parish in Wooster, Ohio, is inviting fallen-away Catholics to start attending Mass again this fall with its Catholics Returning Home program.
According to The Daily Record, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church has been running the program since 2014. The six-week series, which re-catechizes Catholics, is based on Sally Mews’ book “Inviting Catholics Home.”
The classes answer questions on Catholic beliefs, especially about the Eucharist and Confession, and offer an explanation of the Mass.
Mary Zuercher, the program’s team coordinator, said in the parish announcement, “Our team provides a non-judgmental, confidential, safe place where individuals can explore the challenges they have faced and their concerns associated along the way with their faith journey.”
Parishioner Susan Sonnet spoke in the announcement about how the program helped her reignite her faith.
“I was raised in the Catholic Church and schools and did the same with my children,” she said, adding that as life became busier, she increasingly relied on herself instead of God. “I fell away from actively living the traditions and blessings offered at St. Mary. But I quietly longed for those comforts. This program welcomed me back, helped me revive my faith and, most especially, guided me to receive again the precious gifts of the Sacraments God offers there.”
