Saint Gildas the Wise (c. 500–570) was a British monk, abbot, and one of the earliest Christian historians of Britain. Living during a turbulent period marked by conflict and moral decline, he dedicated his life to prayer, teaching, and the call to repentance.
Saint Gildas is best known for his writings, especially On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain, in which he courageously called rulers and people alike to conversion, justice, and fidelity to God. Though firm in truth, his life was marked by holiness, humility, and deep devotion.
As an abbot, Saint Gildas formed monks in discipline and love of Scripture, helping preserve the Christian faith during difficult times. His witness reminds us that true love sometimes requires speaking the truth with courage and charity.
