Saint of the Day: Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr

Saint Agnes was a young Christian girl who lived in Rome during the early 4th century. Despite her youth, she showed extraordinary courage and faith in Christ. When she refused to marry and renounced all suitors, declaring that she belonged only to Christ, she was arrested during the persecution of Christians.

Saint Agnes remained firm in her faith, choosing death rather than deny her Lord or compromise her purity. She suffered martyrdom at a very young age, becoming one of the most beloved early martyrs of the Church. Her name, which means “pure,” reflects the holiness of her life and her total dedication to God.

Saint Agnes is honored as a model of purity, courage, and unwavering love for Christ. Her witness reminds us that holiness is possible at every age and that faithfulness to God is worth every sacrifice.

Lambs are traditionally blessed on the feast of Saint Agnes in Rome, symbolizing her innocence and her title as a lamb of Christ.

Prayer to Saint Agnes

Saint Agnes,
pure virgin and courageous martyr,
pray for us, especially for young people.
Help us remain faithful to Christ
and to live lives of purity, courage, and love.
Intercede for us,
that we may always choose God above all else.
Amen.
