Meditation and Reflection for Day 5 – Faith: A Light Shining in Darkness
“I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
The executioners had done their gruesome work and left the place, leaving behind, tied to the tree, the apparently lifeless body of their victim. But Sebastian wasn’t dead yet. In the dark of the night, an angel descended and consoled the brave soldier of Christ, who regained consciousness. The angel announced how greatly the Church would be honored because of his heroism and how many would embrace the holy faith because of the example he set in his martyrdom. He also revealed the glorious reward awaiting him from Christ, Whom he loved so much.
Sebastian felt immense joy and thanked the Lord for this sweet visitation. Then the angel called out into the night to attract the attention of nearby people. A Christian woman named Irene hastened to the scene and took the still-living body of the holy martyr to care for him.
This moment reminds us that even in our darkest trials—when we feel abandoned, pierced by suffering, or left for dead—God’s light breaks through. St. Sebastian’s survival after such brutality shows that true faith is indestructible. It is a light that no arrow, no persecution, no illness can extinguish. When we remain faithful, God sends consolation, whether through angelic means, through others, or through inner grace. His wounds became a testimony, drawing others closer to Christ.
Reflection Question to Ponder: In your own struggles, where have you seen God’s light shine through the darkness? Ask St. Sebastian for the grace to let your faith shine as a beacon, even when it hurts, trusting that God can heal, restore, and use your trials for His greater glory.
Merciful Father, may the glorious intercession of Your blessed martyr Saint Sebastian be our protection. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
