Saint of the Day: Saint William of Bourges (1140–1209)

Saint William of Bourges was a humble priest, bishop, and reformer known for his deep love for the poor and his unwavering commitment to justice and holiness.

Born into a noble family in France, William chose a life of simplicity and study rather than wealth or honor. He became a respected teacher of theology and later entered the Cistercian Order, where he embraced a life of prayer, discipline, and humility.

In 1200, William was appointed Archbishop of Bourges. As bishop, he lived very simply, often giving his own possessions to the poor. He strongly defended the rights of the Church, corrected corruption among clergy, and protected the weak against injustice—even when it cost him personal suffering.

Saint William was known for his holiness, wisdom, and compassion. Many miracles were reported through his intercession, both during his life and after his death. He was canonized in 1218.

Saint William of Bourges reminds us that true leadership in the Church is rooted in humility, charity, and faithfulness to Christ.
