Saint of the Day: Saint André Bessette (1845–1937)

Humble Servant of God and Apostle of Saint Joseph

Saint André Bessette was a simple and humble man who trusted completely in God. Born into poverty in Canada, he had little education and poor health, yet God used him powerfully to bring hope and healing to thousands.

As a religious brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Saint André worked as a porter at a college. Though his tasks were simple, his faith was extraordinary. He had a deep devotion to Saint Joseph, and he encouraged everyone who came to him to pray and trust in God’s mercy.

Through his prayers and humility, many people experienced healing—always, André insisted, through God’s power, not his own. His great life’s work was the promotion of devotion to Saint Joseph, which led to the building of the great Oratory of Saint Joseph in Montreal, now one of the largest churches in the world.

Saint André reminds us that holiness is not about greatness in the eyes of the world, but faithfulness in small things.

He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Prayer to Saint André Bessette

Saint André Bessette,
humble servant of God and faithful friend of Saint Joseph,
teach us to trust in God’s will
and to serve others with simplicity and love.

Help us to believe that God works
even through our weaknesses and limitations.
Pray for us,
that we may grow in faith, humility, and perseverance.

Amen.
