Saint of the Day: The Holy Innocents, Martyrs

Short Biography

On December 28, the Church commemorates The Holy Innocents, the young children of Bethlehem who were killed by order of King Herod in his attempt to destroy the newborn King, Jesus Christ.

Though these innocent children never spoke the name of Christ, they are honored as martyrs because they gave their lives in His place. The Church teaches that they were baptized in their own blood, becoming the first witnesses to Christ’s coming into the world.

Their feast reminds us that Christ’s birth immediately challenged the powers of darkness. Even in suffering, God’s plan of salvation continued to unfold, and the innocent became instruments of His glory.

Spiritual Meaning

The Holy Innocents testify that God values every human life, especially the most vulnerable. Their sacrifice calls us to defend the dignity of children, the unborn, and all who cannot protect themselves.

They also remind us that suffering, when united to Christ, is never meaningless and can become a powerful witness to God’s justice and mercy.

Prayer

O Holy Innocents,
pure witnesses of Christ,
you gave your lives before you could speak His Name.
Intercede for all children who suffer today,
especially those endangered by violence, poverty, and neglect.

Protect the unborn,
strengthen families,
and soften the hearts of those in power.
May your innocent sacrifice awaken the world
to the sacredness of every human life.

Through your intercession,
may we grow in compassion, courage, and faith.
Amen.
