Saint of the Day: St. John of Kanty (John Cantius), Priest

St. John of Kanty, also known as St. John Cantius, was a humble priest and scholar who lived in 14th-century Poland. He is remembered not for dramatic miracles, but for a life quietly shaped by holiness, charity, and deep love for Christ.

Born in 1390, John was a brilliant student and later became a professor of theology at the University of Kraków. Despite his learning and academic honors, he lived simply and modestly, choosing humility over recognition. He believed that knowledge should always lead to greater love of God and service to others.

St. John was especially known for his charity to the poor. He often gave away his food, money, and even his own clothing to those in need. There is a well-known story that when he once realized he had accidentally given a beggar a stolen item, he ran back to make things right—showing his deep respect for justice and conscience.

He was also a man of prayer, frequently spending long hours before the Blessed Sacrament. As Christmas approached each year, St. John reflected deeply on the mystery of the Incarnation—God humbling Himself to dwell among us.

St. John of Kanty died peacefully on December 24, 1473, just as the Church was preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ. His life reminds us that holiness is often found in faithfulness to small duties, love of truth, and quiet acts of mercy.

Prayer to St. John of Kanty

O St. John of Kanty,
faithful servant of Christ and humble seeker of truth,
teach us to love God with our minds and our hearts.
Help us to live simply, give generously,
and prepare our souls to welcome Jesus at Christmas.

Pray for us,
that we may grow in wisdom, charity, and holiness,
and remain faithful to Christ in all things.
Amen.
