Saint of the Day: Saint Adelaide of Burgundy (c. 931–999)

Saint Adelaide of Burgundy was a holy empress, wife, mother, and widow who used her power not for pride, but for charity, justice, and the glory of God. She is remembered as a woman of deep faith who trusted God through suffering and triumph alike.

Born into royalty, Adelaide became queen at a young age. After her husband was murdered, she was imprisoned for refusing to marry against her will. In her suffering, she turned completely to prayer and trusted God’s providence. Through divine help, she was freed and later married Otto the Great, becoming Empress of the Holy Roman Empire.

Despite her high position, Saint Adelaide lived with humility. She cared deeply for the poor, founded churches and monasteries, supported missionaries, and worked tirelessly for peace. Even after becoming a widow, she continued a life of prayer, fasting, and service.

Saint Adelaide reminds us that holiness is possible in every state of life — whether in leadership, family life, or suffering. She teaches us to remain faithful to God, especially when life is uncertain or painful.

She died peacefully on December 16, 999, known for her wisdom, charity, and unwavering trust in God.

Prayer to Saint Adelaide of Burgundy

O Saint Adelaide,
faithful servant of God and humble empress,
you trusted the Lord in times of sorrow and joy.

Intercede for us,
that we may remain strong in faith,
patient in suffering,
and generous in love toward others.

Help us to use our gifts for God’s glory
and to seek holiness in our daily lives.

Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
