Son of Reiner couple arrested on suspicion of murder

The son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner has been arrested and booked in connection with the murder of his parents, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Dec. 15.

Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody late Dec. 14 and later booked for custody without bail, police said in a statement. He was initially held on a $4 million bail, according to multiple reports, but authorities changed his status to “no bail” in a later update.

The New York Times reported that Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about struggles with drug abuse and periods of homelessness.

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead on the afternoon of Dec. 14 inside their Brentwood home after paramedics responded to a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. local time, according to CBS News. Both victims suffered stab wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” family relatives said in a statement to Variety. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

President Donald Trump drew criticism online after suggesting in a Dec. 15 Truth Social post that Rob Reiner’s political views and critiques against him may have played a role in the killings.

The President said the murders were “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump.”

“Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered,” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., wrote on social media. “I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it.”

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgie, who will leave Congress in January, also criticized the remarks, calling the killings “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.” She noted reports of Nick Reiner’s drug addiction and mental health struggles and said such cases should be met with empathy.

Police said in the statement that the murder case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Dec. 16 for further review and possible filing of charges.
