Saint of the Day: Saint Mary of the Cross (Mary MacKillop)

Saint Mary of the Cross, born Mary Helen MacKillop (1842–1909), was Australia’s first canonized saint and a courageous witness to faith, perseverance, and trust in God. She dedicated her life to serving the poor, especially children who lacked access to education.

Together with Father Julian Tenison Woods, she founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, a religious order committed to education, charity, and care for the marginalized. Despite her holiness, Mary faced misunderstanding, opposition, and even unjust excommunication. She endured these trials with humility, obedience, and unwavering faith, confident that God would bring good from suffering.

Saint Mary of the Cross taught by example that love of God must be lived out in practical service, kindness, and forgiveness. Her life reminds us to trust God’s providence, even when the path is difficult.

Prayer

Saint Mary of the Cross,
teach us to trust God in all circumstances.
Help us to serve the poor with love,
to forgive with humility,
and to remain faithful in times of trial.
Amen.
