Saint of the Day: St. Clement I, Pope and Martyr

St. Clement I, also known as Pope Clement of Rome, was the third successor of St. Peter and one of the earliest popes of the Church, serving around the year 88–99 A.D. He is considered an Apostolic Father, meaning he lived very close to the time of the Apostles and preserved their teachings with great fidelity.

Clement is best known for his Letter to the Corinthians, one of the earliest Christian writings outside Scripture. In it, he urged unity, humility, and obedience in the Church—principles still essential today.

According to ancient tradition, Clement was martyred under Emperor Trajan. He was tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea for refusing to renounce Christ. The anchor later became his symbol of hope and steadfast faith.
