Saint of the Day: Saint Lawrence O’Toole

Feast Day: November 14

About St. Lawrence O’Toole
Today, the Church honors Saint Lawrence O’Toole, a great bishop, peacemaker, and reformer from 12th-century Ireland. Born in 1128 into a noble family, Lawrence was offered as a hostage in a political conflict at just ten years old. After his release, he entered monastic life, growing in holiness through prayer, penance, and charity.

In 1162, he became the Archbishop of Dublin, where he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy, strengthen Church discipline, and bring spiritual renewal to his people. He was known for his deep prayer life, personal poverty, and complete dedication to the poor—often giving away his own food and clothing.

During political upheaval and conflict between Irish leaders and Norman invaders, Lawrence worked as a bridge of peace, negotiating, mediating, and urging forgiveness. Even while under threat, he refused to abandon his flock.

He died in France in 1180 while traveling for peace negotiations. Miracles quickly followed his death, and he was canonized in 1225.

Saint Lawrence O’Toole is remembered as a shepherd who brought unity, healing, and the love of Christ to a wounded nation.

Prayer:
Saint Lawrence O’Toole, gentle shepherd and peacemaker, pray that our hearts may be instruments of peace and charity. Help us to trust God in all trials and to serve others with humility. Amen.
