Former Vice President Dick Cheney dead at 84

Dick Cheney, whose influential career in U.S. politics spanned decades, died Nov. 3, his family reported the following day.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” a statement from the family said. “He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passsed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”

The statement noted Cheney’s many roles in politics, including congressman for Wyoming, White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford, Secretary of Defense in the George H.W. Bush administration, and vice president under President George W. Bush.

Cheney was widely regarded as a powerbroker with outsized influence, especially over the controversial foreign policy and domestic surveillance measures that followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He was a leading proponent of the invasion of Iraq by U.S. forces in 2003.

During the political upheavals of the decade leading up to his death, Cheney became an outspoken critic of populist movements on the right. In particular, he vehemently opposed President Donald Trump’s rise to power in the Republican Party.

In 2024, Cheney called on Republican voters to join him in supporting Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, arguing “there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.”

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” his family stated. “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by gthis noble giant of a man.”
