Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced Oct. 27 it is resuming abortion at its facilities, nearly a month after suspending all abortions in response to a federal funding restriction signed by President Donald Trump in July.
The organization stopped performing abortions Oct. 1 after Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” barred abortion providers from receiving Medicaid reimbursements for one year if they held federal “Essential Community Provider” status.
Wisconsin is among several states challenging the law in federal court. According to the Associated Press, a U.S. appeals court ruled in September that the government could suspend Medicaid payments to affected providers while the case proceeds.
To continue billing Medicaid, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has now relinquished its “Essential Community Provider” designation — effectively removing itself from the group restricted under the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
“Providing compassionate, high-quality care to our patients has always been our mission — and it always will be,” Tanya Atkinson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, said in a news release. “At a time when politicians are working to take away health care from women and families, we are fighting back with everything we have. We’ve been here before. We’ve stood up to relentless attacks on reproductive health for decades — and we are not backing down now. Our patients deserve nothing less.”
Wisconsin Right to Life condemned the move, calling it a deliberate attempt to sidestep federal law.
“Planned Parenthood’s abortion-first business model underscores why taxpayer funding should never support organizations that make abortion a priority,” Heather Weininger, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life, said in a press release. “Women in difficult circumstances deserve compassionate, life-affirming care — the kind of support the pro-life movement is committed to offering.”
AP News reported that Planned Parenthood killed at least 3,727 unborn children in Wisconsin between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024.
