Saint of the Day: Saint Onesimus

Saint Onesimus was a slave who encountered the transforming mercy of Christ through Saint Paul the Apostle. After fleeing from his master, Philemon, Onesimus met Paul, who led him to faith and baptism. Through this encounter, Onesimus’ life was completely changed.

Saint Paul later sent Onesimus back to Philemon with a heartfelt letter (the Letter to Philemon), asking that he be received no longer as a slave, but as a beloved brother in Christ. Tradition holds that Onesimus was eventually freed and later became a bishop, faithfully serving the Church.

Saint Onesimus reminds us that the Gospel has the power to restore dignity, heal relationships, and transform hearts.

Did You Know?

Saint Onesimus is mentioned by name in the New Testament in Paul’s Letter to Philemon, one of the shortest yet most personal letters in the Bible.

Prayer

Saint Onesimus,
witness of God’s mercy and transforming grace,
pray for us that we may see one another
as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Help us to forgive, to heal broken relationships,
and to live in the freedom of God’s love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
