Saints Cyril and Methodius (9th century) were brothers from Thessalonica who became great missionaries to the Slavic peoples. Filled with zeal for the Gospel, they dedicated their lives to preaching Christ in a way people could truly understand.
Saint Cyril created the first Slavic alphabet, allowing Scripture and the liturgy to be translated into the local language, while Saint Methodius continued the missionary work with courage and perseverance despite opposition and hardship. Together, they helped unite faith and culture, showing deep respect for the people they served.
They are remembered as Apostles to the Slavs and shining examples of missionary love, unity, and faithfulness to the Church.
Saints Cyril and Methodius are the patron saints of Europe, honored for building bridges between East and West.
Did You Know?
The alphabet created by Saint Cyril later developed into what is known today as the Cyrillic alphabet, still used by millions of people around the world.
