Meditation and Reflection for Day 7 – Bold Witness: Proclaiming Christ Fearlessly
After being healed from his terrible wounds by the loving care of St. Irene, Sebastian did not retreat into safety or hide his faith. Instead, filled with renewed zeal and gratitude for God’s mercy, he boldly returned to the palace and confronted Emperor Diocletian himself. Standing before the ruler who had ordered his execution, Sebastian fearlessly rebuked him for persecuting Christians and proclaimed the truth of Christ, calling him to repentance and conversion.
The emperor, shocked and enraged that his former captain was still alive, ordered Sebastian to be clubbed to death and his body thrown into the sewer. Yet Sebastian’s courageous witness left an indelible mark—many were inspired by his unflinching love for Christ, even in the face of certain death.
This moment reveals a profound truth of the Christian life: true healing and restoration from God are not given for our comfort alone, but to empower us for greater mission and witness. In Catholic theology, every grace received (whether physical, emotional, or spiritual) is meant to be shared for the salvation of souls (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7). St. Sebastian teaches us that when God delivers us from trials, He often calls us to step forward boldly, speaking truth in love, defending the faith, and pointing others to Christ—even when it costs us.
In our own lives, we may experience moments of healing after deep suffering (through sacraments, prayer, or divine consolation). The question is: Will we keep silent, or will we, like Sebastian, go back into the “palace” of our world—our families, workplaces, social circles—and proclaim Christ with courage?
Here are inspiring classic artworks depicting St. Sebastian’s bold confrontation with the emperor and his final martyrdom by clubbing, to help you visualize his fearless witness:
Reflection Question to Ponder:
Where in your life is God calling you to witness more boldly after a time of healing or trial? What fear holds you back, and how can St. Sebastian’s example help you overcome it? Ask for the grace to speak of Christ with love and courage.
Pray Day 7
Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint, I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not finish you.
The piercing wounds inflicted for your faith only proved to strengthen your belief. May you intercede for those who are weakened from the effects of disease. I ask for your intercession that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ. Amen.
(Mention your request here…)
St. Sebastian, pray for us.
Fearless martyr, intercede for us!
Say 1: Our Father… Say 1: Hail Mary… Say 1: Glory Be…
