Day 6: St. Sebastian Novena

Meditation and Reflection for Day 6 – Healing and Renewed Courage

After the soldiers left him for dead, pierced by countless arrows and tied to the tree, St. Sebastian was discovered still alive by the holy Christian woman Irene (often venerated as St. Irene of Rome). In the darkness of night, she and her companions gently removed him from the tree, carried him to safety, and tenderly cared for his wounds. Through her compassionate hands and God’s grace, Sebastian was healed—not just physically, but spiritually renewed with even greater zeal. Once restored, he boldly returned to confront Emperor Diocletian, proclaiming Christ once more, leading to his final martyrdom by clubbing.

This powerful episode reminds us of the Church’s teaching on healing: God often works through human instruments (like Irene) to restore us, as we see in the sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation. Our wounds—whether from persecution, illness, betrayal, sin, or life’s arrows—do not have the last word. In Catholic theology, suffering united to Christ’s Passion becomes redemptive (Colossians 1:24), and God can transform our pain into strength for greater witness. Just as Sebastian rose healed to proclaim the Gospel again, our trials, when offered up, prepare us for bolder faith and service.

St. Sebastian’s recovery shows divine providence: even when we feel abandoned after the “arrows” hit, God sends consolation, healing, and purpose. He calls us to be “Irene” to others—bringing mercy and care to the wounded around us.

Pray Day 6

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint, I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not finish you.
The piercing wounds inflicted for your faith only proved to strengthen your belief. May you intercede for those who are weakened from the effects of disease. I ask for your intercession that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ. Amen.

(Mention your request here…)

St. Sebastian, pray for us.

Fearless martyr, intercede for us!

 Say 1: Our Father…    Say 1: Hail Mary…  Say 1: Glory Be…
