Saint of the Day: Saint Hyginus, Pope and Martyr (d. c. 140)

Saint Hyginus was the ninth Pope of the Catholic Church and a courageous martyr who guided the Church during a time of persecution and doctrinal confusion.

Born in Greece, Saint Hyginus became Pope around the year 136, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. Though persecution was less violent at this time, the Church faced serious internal challenges, especially from false teachers and early heresies that threatened the truth of the Gospel.

As Pope, Saint Hyginus worked to safeguard the teachings handed down from the Apostles. He helped organize the structure of the clergy and defended the unity of the Church against errors that denied the true humanity and divinity of Christ. His leadership strengthened the foundations of Catholic doctrine and Church discipline.

Saint Hyginus faithfully served Christ until his death, which tradition honors as martyrdom. He was buried near the tomb of Saint Peter, a sign of his deep communion with the Apostolic Church.

Saint Hyginus reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to the teachings of the Church, even in times of confusion and opposition.

Prayer to Saint Hyginus

O Saint Hyginus,
faithful shepherd of Christ’s Church,
pray for us as we face challenges to truth and unity.

Help us to remain faithful to the teachings of the Apostles,
to love the Church Christ founded,
and to follow Him with courage and perseverance.

Through your intercession,
may we grow in faith, hope, and charity.

Amen.
