Saint of the Day: St. Raymond of Penyafort, Priest

St. Raymond of Penyafort was a 13th-century Spanish priest, canon lawyer, and Dominican friar, known for his wisdom, humility, and deep love for the Church. Born in 1175 in Catalonia, Spain, he became one of the greatest experts in Church law of his time.

St. Raymond is especially remembered for compiling the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX, an important collection of canon law that helped guide the Church for centuries. Despite his great intellect and influence, he lived a life of simplicity, prayer, and obedience.

One of the most famous stories of St. Raymond recounts a miracle in which, trusting completely in God, he is said to have crossed the sea on his cloak when he needed to escape an immoral situation and return to his religious duties. This miracle symbolizes his unwavering commitment to holiness and moral integrity.

St. Raymond also worked tirelessly for the conversion of souls, encouraging the study of languages so missionaries could preach the Gospel more effectively. He served briefly as Master General of the Dominican Order, though he preferred a quiet life of prayer and service.

He died peacefully in 1275, and today he is honored as the patron saint of canon lawyers.
