St. Andrew, the older brother of St. Peter, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and is considered the patron saint of Scotland, Greece, and Russia. According to the Gospels, Andrew was a fisherman by trade, and he was the first disciple called by Jesus to follow Him, famously telling his brother Peter, “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41).
Andrew is known for his missionary work, spreading the Christian faith to places like Greece, Asia Minor, and beyond. He was martyred by crucifixion in the city of Patras, where he was tied to an X-shaped cross, which is now known as the “St. Andrew’s Cross.”
The feast day of St. Andrew is celebrated with great reverence, especially in countries where he is a patron saint. It’s a day to honor his dedication to Christ and his role in the early Christian Church.
Prayer to St. Andrew the Apostle
“St. Andrew, faithful servant of Christ,
You answered the call to follow Jesus without hesitation.
Intercede for us, that we may have the courage to follow Christ faithfully in our own lives.
Help us to spread His message of love, hope, and salvation,
And to remain steadfast in our faith, even in times of trial.
Through your example, may we grow in holiness and draw closer to the heart of God.
Amen.”
