Saint of the Day: Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne

Feast Day: November 18
Patron of: Perseverance in adversity, missionary work, and education

Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769–1852) was a French-born Religious Sister of the Society of the Sacred Heart who devoted her life to missionary service in the United States. Known for her deep prayer and endurance, she was given the Native American name “Quah-kah-ka-num-ad”, meaning “The Woman Who Prays Always.”

She arrived in Louisiana in 1818 and worked tirelessly to establish schools, especially for Native American and frontier children. Her mission was filled with hardship—illness, language barriers, and extreme poverty—yet she never gave up, trusting fully in God’s call.

Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne reminds us that even when visible results seem small, faithful prayer and sacrifice transform souls.

Prayer

O God, who filled Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne with burning zeal for the salvation of souls, grant that through her intercession we may serve You with unwavering faith and love. Amen.
