Saint of the Day: St. Elizabeth of Hungary

Feast Day: November 17

Patronage: Widows, charities, and those who serve the poor.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207–1231) was a Hungarian princess known for her deep compassion and love for the poor. Although she lived in royal courts, she chose a life of humility, prayer, and service. Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia, with whom she shared a strong life of faith. After his death, she dedicated herself completely to works of charity.

She built hospitals, cared for the sick with her own hands, and used her wealth to alleviate the suffering of the poor. One famous miracle associated with her is the “Miracle of the Roses”—when food she was secretly taking to the poor appeared as roses to protect her from criticism.

St. Elizabeth died at only 24 years old, yet her short life left a lasting legacy of Christian charity.

Prayer

Lord, through the example of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, inspire us to love the poor and serve You with joyful hearts. Amen.
