Saint of the Day: Saint Leo the Great

Feast Day: November 10

About St. Leo the Great
Today, the Church honors Saint Leo the Great, one of the most remarkable popes in history. Born in Tuscany, Italy, around the year 400, Leo became pope in 440 and led the Church with great wisdom and courage for over 20 years.

He was a strong defender of the faith, especially against heresies that threatened to divide the Church. His writings on the mystery of Christ’s two natures—divine and human—were so profound that the Council of Chalcedon (451) declared, “Peter has spoken through Leo.”

Saint Leo is also remembered for his deep charity and for meeting Attila the Hun face to face, persuading him to spare the city of Rome—an act that showed both his courage and holiness.

He was declared a Doctor of the Church for his great theological teachings and pastoral care.

Prayer:
O God, who raised up Pope Saint Leo the Great to protect and teach Your Church, grant that through his prayers we may remain firm in the true faith and live in unity of spirit and truth. Amen.
