A new museum about the Shroud of Turin will open Nov. 18 on the campus of Christ Cathedral of the Diocese of Orange, California.
Across its 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, “The Shroud of Turin: An Immersive Experience” will use the Shroud of Turin as an entryway to bring visitors through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is designed as a 90-minute experience that offers information about the extensive scientific research that has been done on the Shroud.
“If all we do is prove that the Shroud was the shroud of Jesus, without the Resurrection, all we’ve done is prove it’s a shroud of a guy who lived 2,000 years ago,” Pat Powers, president of the museum, said in a press release from the diocese. “But it’s a lot more than that. We’re going to show people that their faith is not in vain. The Shroud shows us that Jesus was, in fact, resurrected. The museum shows us how we can discern that from the Shroud.”
The museum will be open through at least 2030, according to the release. It is presented in partnership between the diocese and Othonia, an international group centered in Rome and dedicated to the study and popularization of the Shroud of Turin. Othonia provided most of the museum’s written content, according to the release. The $5 million museum has been privately funded through donors.
Nora Creech, North America director of Othonia, hopes that the museum will encourage visitors to engage with the details of the New Testament, and she believes that they will ultimately realize that their questions can lead to greater faith in Christ.
“We’re inviting all into the tomb to see what Jesus’ Apostles John and Peter saw,” Creech said, according to the release. “And then we’re encouraging them to explore and question, just like Jesus told Thomas. Put your hands here and probe around, examine, ask all your questions. The Shroud holds up to it. It encourages curiosity and it holds up to every level of scrutiny.”
The museum will be open daily. More information can be found at theshroudexperience.com.
