Vatican News to premiere documentary on Pope Leo’s American roots

To mark the six-month anniversary of Pope Leo XIV’s election, Vatican Radio – Vatican News will release a new documentary, “Leo from Chicago,” exploring the Pope’s American origins and early life.

According to Vatican News, the film premieres Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. Rome time (noon Eastern Time) and will be available in English, Italian, and Spanish on Vatican News’ digital channels.

The hour-long documentary traces the story of Robert Francis Prevost — now Pope Leo XIV — from his childhood in Dolton, Illinois, through his studies and Augustinian vocation, featuring reflections from his brothers Louis and John, as well as teachers, classmates, and lifelong friends.

“Leo from Chicago” follows “León de Perú,” a previous Vatican News production highlighting Pope Leo’s missionary years in Peru. The new film was produced by the Vatican Dicastery for Communication in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Los Angeles-based Hispanic Apostolate El Sembrador Nueva Evangelización (ESNE). Journalists Deborah Castellano Lubov, Salvatore Cernuzio, and Felipe Herrera-Espaliat led the production.

According to Vatican News, the documentary will also be distributed internationally through other media outlets.
