Why is the Our Father the best of all prayers?

The Our Father, also known as the Lord’s Prayer, holds a unique and privileged place in Christian life. Taught to us by Jesus Himself (Matthew 6:9–13, Luke 11:2–4), it is often called the “perfect prayer” because it contains everything a believer needs to approach God with faith, humility, and trust.

The Prayer Given by Christ

Unlike other prayers written by saints or composed by the Church through the centuries, the Our Father comes directly from the lips of Jesus. When the disciples asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1), He responded with these words. This alone makes the prayer unlike any other: it is not only about God but given to us by God Himself.

A Complete Expression of Faith

The Our Father is the best of prayers because it embraces all aspects of our relationship with God:

  • Adoration: “Hallowed be Thy name” gives glory to God.
  • Surrender to His Will: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done” places us in obedience to the Father.
  • Petition for Daily Needs: “Give us this day our daily bread” reminds us that everything, physical and spiritual, comes from His providence.
  • Forgiveness and Mercy: “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” calls us to imitate the mercy of God.
  • Protection from Evil: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” acknowledges our weakness and dependence on His strength.

A Prayer of Unity

Every time Catholics pray the Our Father at Mass or in private devotion, they are united with Christians everywhere. It is a family prayer, addressing God as Our Father, not my Father, reminding us that we belong to the Body of Christ.

The School of Prayer

The saints and the Catechism of the Catholic Church describe the Our Father as the “summary of the whole Gospel” (CCC 2761). By praying it slowly and attentively, we learn how to pray with the heart of Christ Himself. St. Teresa of Ávila advised that if one prays the Our Father with love and attention, no other prayer is needed.

The ”Our Father”

The Our Father is the best of all prayers because it is the prayer of Jesus, the perfect model of prayer, and the treasure of the Church. When we pray it, we do not merely recite words—we enter into the heart of Christ and allow His Spirit to form our hearts in love, trust, and surrender to the will of the Father.

Pray then like this:

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
