Happy Feast Day: Our Lady of Mercy (Our Lady of Ransom)

Feast Day: September 24

The Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, also known as Our Lady of Ransom, traces back to the 13th century when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Peter Nolasco in Spain. She asked him to establish an order dedicated to the redemption of Christians held captive by muslims and pirates. In response, the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Mercedarians) was founded in 1218. Its members took a special vow to offer themselves, if necessary, in exchange for those unjustly imprisoned. This feast reminds us of Mary’s tender compassion and her role as a mother who frees her children from both physical and spiritual captivity.

Prayer

Our Lady of Mercy, compassionate Mother, free us from the chains of sin and lead us closer to your Son, Jesus. Intercede for all who suffer injustice, captivity, or persecution, that they may find peace and freedom in God. Amen.
