Saint of the Day: Saint Januarius (San Gennaro)

Feast Day: September 19

Patronage: Naples, Italy; blood banks; against volcanic eruptions.

Short Biography:
Saint Januarius was the Bishop of Benevento in Italy during the early 4th century. He is best known for his unwavering faith during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Tradition holds that Januarius visited imprisoned Christians to encourage them, which led to his arrest. He was martyred around the year 305 by beheading.

One of the most famous miracles associated with Saint Januarius is the liquefaction of his blood, preserved in a vial in Naples. This miracle occurs several times a year, especially on his feast day, and is seen by the faithful as a sign of his intercession and God’s ongoing presence.

Prayer:
O Saint Januarius, courageous witness of Christ, strengthen our faith and protect us in times of trial. Pray for the people of Naples and for all who seek your intercession. Amen.
