On September 15, the Church honors Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in remembrance of the deep suffering she endured during her life, especially in union with her Son, Jesus Christ. This feast follows immediately after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, reminding us of Mary’s unique participation in the mystery of Christ’s Passion.
Tradition recalls the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which include Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, losing the child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Him on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His body after the Crucifixion, and laying Him in the tomb.
Through her sorrows, Mary teaches us how to accept trials with faith, courage, and unwavering trust in God. Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows invites us to unite our own sufferings with Christ and His Blessed Mother, who walks with us in times of pain and hope.
Prayer
O Mother of Sorrows, by the pain you endured in union with your Son, help me to carry my crosses with love and faith. Teach me to stand steadfast in times of trial and draw me closer to the Heart of Jesus. Amen.
