Saint of the Day: St. Peter Claver

Feast Day: September 9

Saint Peter Claver (1580–1654) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary who dedicated his life to serving enslaved Africans in Cartagena, Colombia. After being ordained a priest, he made a vow to be “the slave of the slaves forever.”

When ships filled with enslaved people arrived at the port, Peter Claver would board them immediately, bringing food, medicine, and comfort. He baptized more than 300,000 enslaved people during his lifetime and advocated for their dignity, often facing opposition for his work. His ministry was not only about preaching but also about living the Gospel through compassion, mercy, and justice.

Saint Peter Claver is remembered as a champion of human rights and the dignity of every person, especially the most forgotten. He is the patron saint of slaves, African missions, and interracial justice.

Prayer

Saint Peter Claver, you saw the face of Christ in those the world rejected. Inspire us to treat every person with dignity and love. Help us to serve the poor, the oppressed, and the forgotten with true Christian charity. Amen.
