Saint of the Day: Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

Short Biography:
Saint Teresa of Calcutta, known worldwide as Mother Teresa, was born in 1910 in Skopje (present-day North Macedonia). At a young age, she felt called to religious life and joined the Sisters of Loreto, moving to India to teach. In 1946, during a train ride, she received a “call within a call” from Jesus, urging her to serve the poorest of the poor.

In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to serving the sick, abandoned, and dying. Her small act of love grew into a global mission, spreading God’s mercy across continents. Despite hardships and her own interior struggles, she radiated joy and faith.

Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, but always insisted she was just “a small pencil in God’s hand.” She died on September 5, 1997, and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.

Legacy:
She is remembered as a living witness of Christ’s love, especially to those forgotten by society. Her life shows that holiness is found in small acts of love done with great devotion.

 Prayer:
Saint Teresa of Calcutta, you loved Jesus in the poorest of the poor.
Help us to see His face in everyone we meet,
and to serve with humility and love.
Pray for us, that we may bring God’s mercy to the world.
