Saint of the Day: St. Rosalia

Patronage: Palermo, Sicilian people, and protection from plagues.

Biography
Saint Rosalia, also known as La Santuzza (“the Little Saint”), was born in the 12th century to a noble family in Palermo, Sicily. Choosing a life of prayer and solitude, she withdrew to a cave on Mount Pellegrino, where she lived in union with God until her death.

Centuries later, during a plague in Palermo in 1624, her relics were discovered and carried in procession through the city. Miraculously, the plague ended, and she was venerated as the city’s patroness. To this day, the people of Palermo honor her with great devotion, especially during the annual Festino di Santa Rosalia.

Prayer

O God, who called Saint Rosalia to a life of prayer and solitude,
grant that through her intercession we may seek You above all things
and find protection in times of trial.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
